(校外)【音樂報馬仔】FROM THE LAND OF THE TSARS
“From the opening sound of tolling bells to the developments that follow, we sense rising before us Russia in all its grandeur.” (Nicolai Medtner on Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto)
Alain Lefèvre, a true specialist in the romantic repertory, will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a work fraught with emotional turbulence and intense lyricism, and surely the most famous piano concerto of the entire twentieth century. The program also includes Borodin’s captivating Polovtsian Dances, Stravinsky’s splendid Firebird Suite inspired by a Russian fairy tale, excerpts from Prokofiev’s opera War and Peace, and Tchaikovsky’s thrilling 1812 Overture.

【音樂報馬仔】約夏貝爾與紅色小提琴
Joshua Bell’s charisma and eloquent musicianship have been captivating audiences for two decades now. He has been appearing regularly with the OSM both on stage and in the recording studio. This time he returns to perform Corigliano’s Violin Concerto (The Red Violin), which he premiered in 2007. This is an extended version of the music for the eponymous film, which won its composer an Oscar in 1999.
Jacques Lacombe enjoys a special relationship with the OSM, having held the post of assistant conductor from 1994-1998, then of principal guest conductor from July, 2002 to May, 2006. He appears today on the world’s leading concert stages in highly varied repertory for orchestra, ballet and opera. This season he conducts a world premiere by Ramon Humet, winner of the Olivier Messiaen Prize as part of the first OSM International Composition Prize. Lacombe also leads the OSM in Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. The Orchestra’s recording of this work won a Juno in 1989.
