德佛扎克的第八號（Dvorak’s Eight）

Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8 is a glowing, moving tribute to its composer’s sensitivity to the beauties of nature. This romantic symphony, full of optimism, inspiration and folk-inspired melodies, yet incorporating touches of humour as well, truly breathes joie de vivre. The Eighth Symphony has enjoyed great success ever since its premiere. It was warmly praised by Hans Richter, who conducted it on many occasions, as well as by the composer Leoš Janácek: “Scarcely does one discover some wonderful moment than the next comes ambling into view; you find yourself in a state of constant but pleasant excitement.”

On the first part of the program, the young Canadian pianist Jimmy Brière plays Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, one of the most formidable works in the solo repertory, one that tests the pianist’s technical skills to the utmost. This is a work with which Brière has particularly been associated.
