CBC/McGill presents Aiyun Huang and the McGill Percussion Ensemble

Montreal, Febuary 3rd, 2009 – The CBC/McGill Concert Series has invited Taiwanese-Canadian percussionist Aiyun Huang and the McGill Percussion Ensemble for its next concert, on Thursday February 12th at 7:30 pm at McGill University’s Pollack Hall. Violinist Mark Fewer and clarinettist Lori Freedman will also be featured in this concert.

For this event, Canadian composer Michael Oesterle has been commissioned to write a new work by the CBC. His “Cepheid Variations” is written for solo glockenspiel, two vibraphones and two marimbas. The programme will also feature “Links No. 5 (Sitting on the Edge of Nothing) for solo vibraphone” (1987), by Stuart Saunders Smith; Lou Harrison’s “Concerto for Violin and Percussion Orchestra” (1940-59); “Bass Clarinet and Percussion” (1981), by Morton Feldman.

This concert is an exceptional opportunity to hear world-renown percussionist Aiyun Huang, head of the percussion department at the Schulich School of Music. Constantly challenging the boundaries between percussion, theatre and more, Huang has performed throughout North America, Mexico, Europe and Asia as a soloist and chamber musician.

She will be joined by two members of the Schulich School of Music faculty, clarinettist Lori Freedman and violinst Mark Fewer. Freedman is described as “a musical revolutionary”, and known internationally as one of the most provocative and creative performers in her field. Her work includes contemporary, improvised and electroacoustic music, and frequent collaborations with dance, theatre and visual artists. Considered one of the most unique and creative musical voices of his generation, Fewer is comfortable in a variety of roles, switching easily from duties as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral leader, jazz musician, and artistic programmer.
The McGill Percussion Ensemble performs a wide variety of repertoire, with a strong commitment to the performance of new music. Along with its regular concerts on campus, the ensemble performs frequently in other locations and for CBC Radio's English and French networks.

Pollack Hall is located at 555 Sherbrooke Street West. All tickets can be purchased at the Pollack Hall Box Office, weekdays from noon to 6 pm or one hour prior to each concert. Tickets are $15 (students and seniors $10), price includes taxes and service charges. They are also available at Admission outlets (where service charges apply). Admission: 514.790.1245 or visit www.admission.com.
