Hey everyone!

On Wednesday, February 18th, The Film Society will be screening Hou Hsiao Hsien's Good Men, Good Women at 7pm in the Cultural studies screening room at 3475 Peel.

In the movie, actress Liang Jing's diary is stolen and the pages faxed back to her, forcing her to review a her past as a drug-addicted barmaid involved with a gangster. The pains of both her own past and China's are visited upon her as she prepares to play the part of an anti-Japanese guerrilla in the 1940's in a movie entitled "Good Men, Good Women." The past cannot quite stay dead in this film, which is less about a historical story than how to understand history in general: Good Men, Good Women is awash in disparate languages -- Mandarin, Japanese, Taiwanese, Cantonese -- and are filled with references to personal diaries and other forms of personal documentation. All subvert the notion of a single unified historical narrative, complicating notions of Taiwanese history and National Identity.

If you have ever taken Introduction to Cultural Studies at McGill, Hsien's Good Men, Good Women is the film that Prof. Nystrom uses in contrast with Spielberg's Schindler's List to illustrate the difference between high brow and middle brow, respectively. With this in mind, Nystrom will be attending this screening as a special guest, and will take part in the discussion afterwards.

Take a break from studying and come out and enjoy this fantastic and under-appreciated film.
