“God, how beautiful it is! It is one of the greatest masterpieces of modern music.” Thus wrote Stravinsky to Florent Schmitt, about the latter’s ballet La Tragédie de Salomé (The Tragedy of Salome). An exotic and bewitching work well worth discovering! Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Piano is full of humour and warmth, designed to entertain. Angela Cheng, one of Canada’s truly great pianists, performs as soloist. The enchantment, fancy, and exoticism continue with Ravel’s Mother Goose, performed in the full ballet version.

Renowned for both his dazzling virtuosity and profound musicality, the young Chinese pianist makes a rare appearance with the OSM as soloist in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. His visit here culminates with a recital of focal works of the piano repertory, including Albéniz’ Iberia, Prokofiev’s Seventh Sonata and Beethoven’s Appassionata.
